Located near the Cyrodilic border, Falkreath Hold is covered in characteristic pine forests. Besides its capital, Falkreath, which is ruled by Jarl Siddgeir, in this hold is also the now infamous village Helgen, the location of the first dragon attack.

Haafingar contains the provincial capital Solitude, which is governed by Jarl Elisif the Fair, and is also the home of the Thalmor Embassy. Alongside those are the town of Dragon Bridge, the Solitude Sawmill, the Solitude Lighthouse and the Statue to Meridia.

Hjaalmarch is by far the most impoverished of the nine Holds. Its capital, Morthal, commanded by Jarl Idgrod Ravencrone, is unwalled and often shrouded in a thick fog. This hold is also the location of Labyrinthian, the well-known Nordic ruins.

Dominated by ice fields and glacial deposits, the Pale is one of the four oldest holds in Skyrim. The capital, Danwstar, is under the control of Jarl Skald the Elder. Among the many other landmarks, caves and villages, the Shrine of Mehrunes Dagon is located here.

The Reach, situated in the far west of Skyrim, is under the leadership of Jarl Igmund. Outside the capital of Markath, where the jarl resides, is the mining town of Karthwasten, as well as three other mines where you can find Orichalum, gold and iron.

The Rift is the southernmost hold in Skyrim, sitting in the eastern corner of the province on the borders of both Morrowind and Cyrodiil. The capital, Riften, led by Jarl Laila Law-Giver, is known notoriously for being the housing area of the Thieves Guild.

In the middle of the country is Whiterun Hold, covered mostly in tundra. Due to its central location, its capital, Whiterun, is a popular trading spot, and is looked after by Jarl Balgruuf the Greater. Whiterun Hold is also the whereabouts of the Throat of the World.

Black Marsh is the dense swampland to the southeast of Cyrodiil and is home to the reptilian humanoid race of Argonians. They thrive in the foreboding swamps, a lush and threatening land teeming with poisonous plants and violent predators.

Elsweyr is comprised of the deserts and jungles to the southern coast of Cyrodiil and is home to the feline Khajiit. The government is a confederacy held together by the Mane, which are the rarest of the various Khajiit breeds. An important part of theculture is the Moon Sugar that is harvested in Elsweyr.

Hammerfell is a province in the west of Tamriel, bordering Skyrim, Cyrodiil, and High Rock. This province is dominated by the wasteland of the Alik'r desert. It is inhabited by the human race of Redguards, who fled to Tamriel after their home, Yokuda, was destroyed.

High Rock is a province in northwest section of Tamriel. The coastal region is temperate and covered in loose forests; inland, it becomes more rocky and mountainous. Most of the province is inhabited by the Bretons, who have divided the province into multiple Breton city states and minor kingdoms.

Morrowind is the province in the northeast corner of Tamriel. It is dominated by the large island of Vvardenfell, but also includes territory on the continental mainland. The Sea of Ghosts lies northeast of Morrowind. This province is also home to the Dunmer, or Dark Elves.

Summerset Isle, sometimes spelled Sumurset Isle or Sumerset Isle, and known by the second Aldmeri Dominion as Alinor, is a large island to the southwest of Tamriel's mainland. Its native populace consists of the Altmer, which are also called High Elves.
