So I ran. I ran and…well…you don't need to know how, but the Forsworn were more than hospitable to me after showing them how to properly conjure a familiar. They healed my wounds and welcomed me into their community - of course there were some that did not care for my presence there at all. I was not a child of the Reach, a follower of Hagravens, or a true freedom fighter. I was a slave to the high caste of the Summerset Isles, here with my master by chance. They told me their histories, their stories…I saw the far-off, misty-eyed glances shot somewhere off to the side as they recounted the glory days of their people - before Tiber Septim's conquests, before they were deemed 'mad men'.
I befriended a man named Vellwyn, who taught me how to hunt, read animal tracks, and so many other things that I simply cannot find the patience to list to you. I remember nocking an arrow and aiming at a stag, Vellwyn's hands gently adjusting my shoulders, arms, and hips until I was in proper form. He was critical without having to resort to harsh words, yet I saw him reprimand younger warriors all the same. I always thought it was because he knew that harsh words is what made me into such a broken and uninteresting thing. I would follow that man to Oblivion and back, if necessary. He showed me what it was to be free, he broke the dull, dull boy that I was and molded me into a reliable and loyal man. I would be nothing without Vellwyn.
I'm sure certain Nords would call my lapse a showing of my true Altmer character. Maybe…maybe they're right. When my master, Bellrauthien, returned for me, Vellwyn called off his defense and just looked at me. He had been giving me a choice. Return to my life as a slave, or remain with him and the children of the Reach. I could have chosen my fate. I could have…..I could have….I COULD HAVE CHOSEN…Bellrauthien, his words always so cool and thought out, ordered me to kill the Forsworn who had clothed me, fed me, taught me how to be practically. And I did. I killed every single one of them. I remember Vellwyn's last words, as he lay dying, bleeding, cringing… but I do not possess the courage to put them down on paper.
-Snippet from Evdul's private journal
Evdul was born into one of the lowest castes in the Altmer caste system, occupied by mer who did not meet their standards in appearances, disease resistance, etc. When speaking to an Altmer outside of the Summerset Isle, they will jump through hoops not to label the practice of forcing the lower castes into slavery as 'slavery'…but it's rather…obvious that it's not your normal 'servitude'. Evdul had one thing going for him though, he was a gifted mage and fighter in his own right. So much so that he was trained by Thalmor mages to be Bellrauthien's bodyguard, and the Thalmor Noble was no stranger to ambushes and assassination attempts. He was tall and well-muscled for an Altmer man, and took to fighting with fists, swords, or fireballs as if that were what he was meant to do. During a trip to the Embassy in Skyrim, they were ambushed by Nord bandits on the road and Evdul was abandoned by his master. After dispatching the bandits, he quickly ran into the Forswon who took him in and tended his wounds. They taught him how to hunt, care for armor, and various spells belonging to the Destruction school. When Bellrauthien returned for his slave after months of searching, Evdul was forced to slaughter the people he nearly called family, an act which still haunts him.
He returned to being Bellrautien's bodyguard, quiet and unhappy with his new cage. During his scarce free moments, Evdul began to plot his escape and scoured the Noble's library for various texts concerning different schools of magic, absorbing all the knowledge and techniques he could because he knew he would need to know it if he wanted out. After many botched attempts - and terrible beatings for those attempts - Evdul finally managed to escape during a small party where everyone had been distracted by the performers. The elf had fled into the forests before seeking refuge in the sewers of the nearest town, and then finally the coast where he stowed away on a ferry set for Cyrodiil. Knowing that Cyrodiil was still in his master's sphere of influence, he fled into Skyrim, where he resides now.
For an Altmer, Evdul is very odd, lacking the smug outlook and flagrant superiority complex. He also privately worships Talos as the Ninth Divine [but holds contempt for his campaigns against the Forsworn], but keeps this to himself as Nords probably would not take that very well. When he was younger, he followed the traditional Altmer pantheon of the Eight, but after a near death experience near one of Talos's shrines in Cyrodiil involving a Thalmor Assassin, a bear, and a Vigilant of Stendarr. While there wasn't any direct contact between the mer and the Hero God, nor was there a cliche 'white light', but Evdul credits Talos with his escape from all three attackers and a few puzzling dreams he had while making camp near there.
He is very friendly, thoughtful, and level-headed, but possesses a violent temper [with a thankfully long fuse]. The Altmer is also very comedic and light-hearted, not a stranger to making a playful joke at someone's expense. The elf is fun-loving and adventurous, always up for a romp through the woods, wrestling, or hunting, but he also knows when to realize that his or someone else's life is in danger and this playful attitude leaves, making him also very responsible; however, not so much so that it would make him 'motherly'. It should also be noted that he's a very direct, fiery, and assertive fighter. While outside of a fight he is willing to compromise and not too terribly stubborn, he becomes a very headstrong man when you put a bound sword in his hands and a bandit chief in front of him.
Alternatively, Evdul can be very naive and perhaps too trusting or too hopeful, which in turn leads him into getting bamboozled or worse - ambushed and mugged. When he arrived to Skyrim, he hoped that the local Nords would look past his pointed ears and dark gold skin, but that bubble was promptly burst, and he began to hold his tongue around the local Nords, but this mentality of being too unrealistic hasn't left the elf. Evdul, while I said he was not stubborn, is too set in his ideals at times and thus, his sense of justice, which causes him to throw himself into unnecessary dangers for others, or gets him into various arguments at minimum.
He avoids the Reach like the plague and can easily be manipulated through his guilt. Evdul feels the need to constantly redeem himself for his crimes against the Forsworn to people who aren't necessarily Forsworn, which makes him caring and compassionate, but also a little 'goody-goody' and perhaps much like a dog eager to please his master.
He is a talented battlemage, preferring steel to protect his body rather than a temporary Alteration spell. He is well-versed in the schools of Conjuration, Destruction, Restoration, and Alteration, but Evdul still wishes to enhance his skills through the College of Winterhold, but fears going there and settling in would bring his old master to the doorstep. Before anything else, he wishes to kill his master and truly earn his freedom.[/ul]
