The man couldn't help but snort, and, curious, he opened the book, flicking through the first introductory pages, completely ignoring the disaster but for the soft glow that helped him to read.
'My friends, as an avid adventurer I have heard tales spun of wretched sorcery and staggering heroics and yet no tail has ever impressed me more than the historic struggle of the Forsworn of the Reach.'
Faolán 'huh'd as he turned the page - it wasn't often you learned of a person who willingly admired the Forsworn, rather than loathed them.
'That they have all sunk into barbaric tendencies is a great loss, for not many of the races of our noble land, Skyrim, can boast of such a rich and impressive culture. I paved my way through studying their heritage, finding wanting more and more to meet a Reachman face-to-face.
Alas, as I have found out, the majority of these peoples are, along with their great King, Madanach, imprisoned in Cidhna Mine, the infamous prison whose output of silver ore keeps the city of Markarth rich and prosperous. My hopes of meeting a member of the Forsworn were quickly dwindling, not only because fraternizing with them could get me into trouble, but because the Forsworn are a fierce, callous breed. I worry for my healthy should I meet one and ask the wrong question.'
Where he got that impression, Faolán didn't know. Obviously the bloody stories told of them by the Nords had twisted their reputation into a bloody one. Briefly, his grip tightened on the tome until the leather wrapping protested with a crackle. Suddenly filled with a morbid fascination, he continued to read.
'I was down on my luck and was ready to move onto a different subject of study when a contact of mine (whom I will not name for safety reasons) sent word that it was possible to meet a real live Forsworn. There were rumors of a traveling... shall-we-call-it Circus and my contact assured me that I would find the target there. They traveled across Tamriel and only stopped in Solitude for a brief amount of time.
Without hesitation, I packed my bags and took the first horse and cart down to the capital, feeling a rather sophomoric excitement that I would meet the focus of my studies.
Ladies and gentlemen, when I arrived, it was not at all what I expected. Rather than a worker of the circus like I expected, the Reachman was an exhibit: one who, the proprietor assured me, raked in the gold because of the bloody stories of the Forsworn that surrounded him. There was no doubt in my mind that this silver-haired man was who I was looking for. He was wearing the genuine armor, and there was something in his eyes and stance that concreted my opinion. Far more regal and honorable than a common bandit, assuredly. They told me his name was Faolán. Faolán the Bloody. Faolán the Forsworn. Faolán the Ferocious.
They told me they could only capture him because he had been somewhat of a scholar, like myself, rather than a warrior, but the constant fighting had buffed him up.
Lips pursed, Faolán considered burning the book before he could finish reading it, but something stopped him. That something insisted he should know what the general public thought of his few years of suffering.
I did not know whether to be disgusted or amazed that owners would so callously endanger the man for the sake of some gold coins. They put him up against all types of creatures; bears, wolves, sabre cats, even a pack of skeevers. I didn't know what the Eight had in store for the man to let him survive as such, but he did. He managed to pulled himself up, beaten and bloody, to glare at the crowd before retreating, obviously to tend to his wounds.
If looks could kill...
Knowing I didn't stand a chance when it came to asking for a civil conversation with him, I left Solitude when the circus did. I did try my best to follow their progress, sending letters and donations and asking for updates on the Reachman's progress. When they suddenly came to a stop one day, I didn't know what to think. Rumors say that Faolán was finally taken down by a rabid bear, disemboweled and thrown out into the forest to rot. Days later, they say his soul came back to slaughter the members of the circus.
I like to think that he survived, that he wanders the wilds as a silver-haired wraith looking for his kin. An encounter with Faolán the Ferocious can't turn up good for anyone, guard or adventurer alike, surely.
The silver haired man snapped the book closed, memories festering that made him tremble. He didn't know if he wanted to keep the book or throw it away, but after a few stiff seconds of silence, he tucked it into his armor. At least they got the story right.
Mostly.
His reputation repaired, Faolán turned and left the scene. He had only survived because of his knowledge of healing spells. He had only been able to keep going because he used those spells to ease his pain after every fight, using enough to stop the bleeding but never fully healing himself, lest he be found out. He hadn't been disemboweled by the bear, but it damn near felt like it, and only after an hour or two of exhausting his Magicka reserves with constant healing was he able to get up and... exact his revenge.
A muffled snarl and a gleam of silver later, Faolán was gone.[/ul]
